چکیده

Synapses exhibit complex filtering properties on short time scales with respect to their presynaptic pulse trains. In particular, the quantal model of neurotransmitter release has been shown to be highly selective for particular presynaptic pulse patterns. However, due to the iterative, pulse-based nature of the original equations describing the quantal model, such analysis has been relegated to heuristics and simulations. In contrast, we derive an explicit expression for the quantal model and apply it to analyzing the transmission of modulated pulse trains across a synapse. We show that for biologically realistic parameters, the quantal model favors periodically modulated pulse trains (such as bursting, chattering or stuttering) over non-modulated (i.e. regular) ones. & 2009 Elsevier B.V. Auditory nerve fiber responses to electric stimulation: modulated and unmodulated pulse trains.

Many modern cochlear implants use sound processing strategies that stimulate the cochlea with modulated pulse trains. Rubinstein et al. [Hear. Res. 127, 108 (1999)] suggested that representation of the modulator in auditory nerve responses might be improved by the addition of a sustained, high-rate, desynchronizing pulse train (DPT). In addition, activity in response to the DPT may mimic the sp...

Extracellular Ca2+ Depletion Contributes to Fast Activity-Dependent Modulation of Synaptic Transmission in the Brain

Synaptic activation is associated with rapid changes in intracellular Ca(2+), while the extracellular Ca(2+) level is generally assumed to be constant. Here, using a novel optical method to measure changes in extracellular Ca(2+) at high spatial and temporal resolution, we find that brief trains of synaptic transmission in hippocampal area CA1 induce transient depletion of extracellular Ca(2+)....

Neuronal response properties of somatosensory cortex (layer IV) are modulated following experience dependent plasticity in c-fiber depleted rats

Previous studies have shown that the receptive field properties, spontaneous activity and spatio-temporal interactions of low-threshold mechanical somatosensory cells in the barrel cortex are influenced by C-fibers. In this study, we examined the effect of C-fiber depletion on response properties of barrel cortex neurons following experience dependent plasticity. Methods: In this study, exte...

Unilateral electrical stimulation of rat locus coeruleus elicits bilateral response of norepinephrine neurons and sustained activation of medial prefrontal cortex.

The brain stem nucleus locus coeruleus (LC) is thought to modulate cortical excitability by norepinephrine (NE) release in LC forebrain targets. The effects of LC burst discharge, typically evoked by a strong excitatory input, on cortical ongoing activity are poorly understood. To address this question, we combined direct electrical stimulation of LC (LC-DES) with extracellular recording in LC ...
